Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson reckons Chelsea striker Fernando Torres only had himself to blame for his dismissal in yesterday’s controversial clash at Stamford Bridge.
The Spaniard went down under a challenge from United centre-back Jonny Evans and Mark Clattenburg gave him a second yellow card for simulation.
The decision came in the wake of a red card for Blues defender Branislav Ivanovic who was deemed to have illegally denied United a goal-scoring opportunity.
However, according to the Daily Record, Ferguson has rejected claims that Clattenburg erred in his judgement that Torres had dived.
“Well, did he intend to dive? Jonny Evans may have caught him a little bit but you can carry on running, which he could’ve done,” said the 70-year-old.
“But he chose to go down. He could’ve carried on and scored. That’s what I can’t understand.”
“I would’ve never missed that chance,” Ferguson added. “I would’ve taken it in my time. I would’ve never gone down. But he did go down - that’s the issue - and he’s already been booked. So, it’s his own fault.”
United’s 3-2 win has cut the gap between themselves and Chelsea to just one point at the top of the Premier League table.
