According to reports Manchester United may be forced to increase their bid for Everton full-back Leighton Baines.
The Manchester Evening News claims United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has baulked at the £20 million demanded by the Toffees.
It is understood United value the England international at closer to £12 million.
While United are not prepared to be held to ransom, they cannot afford to fall behind Manchester City and Chelsea who are likely to spend heavily this summer.
