Stoke City boss Tony Pulis has confirmed that Manchester United have first option on centre-back Ryan Shawcross.

Liverpool are reportedly interested in the Potters skipper, but Pulis revealed any move to Anfield will depend on whether or not United manager Sir Alex Ferguson wants to buy him back.

Pulis has said Shawcross will not be sold in January and explained that Fergie made sure he has the upper hand on any sale after he let the youngster go to Stoke for £1million three years ago.

Pulis said: "Alex has covered his backside, he's got first shout on Ryan - the crafty bugger has sorted it!"
