Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has dedicated his winning goal in last night’s Manchester derby to his team-mates and fans.

Kompany’s powerful 45th minute header was enough to take City top over fierce local rivals Manchester United and the Belgium international devoted the goal to the rest of the City squad and the fans who cheered them on at a raucous Etihad Stadium.

‘This victory goes out to all the team and the fans,’ said Kompany.

‘I’ve heard I’m going to pick up the Man of the Match award, but for me it’s all the other players too (who deserve it).

‘We’re absolutely buzzing, I don’t think we’ve got a word for it.

‘We’ve been waiting for this moment, its far from over and we know that give the fans two wins over Man United but we know we have to finish it off.’

The win put Roberto Mancini’s side level on points with Sir Alex Ferguson’s side but ahead with a goal difference of plus eight, and Kompany has said a league win would be just the start of City’s ambitions.

‘We’re building for the future,’ he admitted

‘To get this result is a bonus, we wanted it so bad and it is what football is all about. The chairman came to visit us today and he outlined what he wants for the club.’

‘It is all about the dreams we have when we’re children and that’s what football is all about.’
