The man accused of murdering student Anuj Bidve watched from a hotel room as police investigated the scene, Manchester Crown Court has heard.
Self-proclaimed "psycho" Kiaran Stapleton, 21, who admits manslaughter on grounds of diminished responsibility, appeared in the dock flanked by four officers.
The court heard how the defendant had checked into the Campanile Hotel on Regent Road on December 27 2011 and watched police at the crime scene opposite.
The next day Stapleton went with three friends to a Manchester tattoo parlour where he asked for a facial teardrop tattoo.
Staff explained to the defendant that this was a sign of having killed someone and a definite “job-stopper.”
Witnesses said Stapleton had been in a hyper state, gesticulating with his left hand down his trousers and repeatedly shouting “Are we down? Are we ready for this?”
When staff warned Stapleton that a tattoo of this nature signified having killed someone, the defendant laughed and joked with his mates, saying: “I killed my goldfish, does that count?”
He then announced that he would be on Crimewatch in the next few weeks.
After an outburst from the defendant at the end of the day, Justice King told the defendant that it was in his interest to refrain from shouting things during the trial.
He told the court: “I understand this is difficult for him.”
Indian student Mr Bidve ,23, was shot in the head at close range while walking along Ordsall Road in Salford at 01.30 on boxing day last year.
The victim, who was studying micro-electronics at Lancaster University was visiting friends in Manchester over the Christmas season.
Mr Bidve’s parents, Subhash and Yogini, have flown over from their home in Pune, India for the trial which is expected to last up to four weeks.
The trial continues.
