A man who shot sickening videos of pain being inflicted on his victim has been sentence to life imprisonment for the murder of a 15 month old boy.

Darren Newton, of Warwick Drive, Earby, near Pendle, Lancashire, was found guilty of murdering little Charlie Hunt, follow a three-week trial at Manchester Crown Court.

Newton was handed a life sentence with the judge imposing a minimum term of 24 years before he can be considered for parole.

He had previously pleaded guilty to 12 cruelty offences but he was convicted of a further count following the trial and found not guilty of one count of cruelty.

Charlie Hunt was pronounced dead after being admitted to Airedale Hospital in West Yorkshire on 19th November last year. A post mortem examination revealed the baby died from significant head injuries.

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Murphy, of Lancashire Constabulary, led the investigation.

He said: “I am pleased with today’s verdict. This was a truly horrific and devastating crime committed by a man who has shown little or no remorse for his actions, or even offered any sort of explanation for what he has done

“Darren Newton is clearly a violent and controlling man who will be spending a very long time behind bars.

“Charlie’s family have been left distraught by their loss and our thoughts remain with them at this difficult time. I would like to pay tribute to the dignified way they have conducted themselves throughout this ordeal and the trial.

“I would also like to thank the Crown Prosecution Service and Counsel for their assistance during this investigation and trial.

“Nothing can bring Charlie back but I hope that the sentence handed down by the judge today will bring them some small comfort as they continue to try to come to terms with his death.”
