Husband held after wife murdered in Manchester park

A husband is under police guard in hospital after his wife was killed in a Manchester park.

Mum-of-two Joanne Oliver, 32, from Whitefield, had her throat slashed in Heaton Park, Prestwich at around 10.15am on Friday.

She was treated by emergency services but died at the scene.

Husband Brian Oliver, 40, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder and taken to hospital with injuries to his throat and wrists.

He remains in a stable condition and his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

Chief Supt Jon Rush from Greater Manchester police said: "This is an absolute tragedy.

"A man who did have some injuries was detained by members of the public. He has been arrested on suspicion of murder."

Heaton Park was reopened to the public while a small cordon remained around where the incident took place.
