The new MP for Bolton South East has been banned from the road for six months after she admitted driving without insurance.

Police stopped Yasmin Qureshi after she was spotted spreaking on a mobile phone while motoring. On inquiry it emerged the she did not have valid insurance, magistrates at Bolton heard.

The former barrister and human rights lawyer was elected as the town's new MP on 6th May but four days later she was caught by police talking into her mobile while driving.

Ms Quereshi, 47, was not in court, and apologised the court through her solicitor who said she would now have the inconvenience of having to use taxis and public transport.

Prosecutor Howard Sloane told the court that around 2.45pm on 10th May a police officer spotted the MP's silver Vauxhall Astra driving along Wigan Road, Bolton.

When stopped and questioned Ms Qureshi admitted she had no excusr for using her phone.

Her details were checked and she was found to have no insurance, Mr Sloane added, as her policy had lapsed on 9th April.

The policy was renewed at 4.05pm the day she was stopped, the court heard.

Mr Sloane said the MP was already on nine points on her licence when she was caught.

She had a previous offence of using her mobile phone while driving dating from 25th May 2008 and two speeding offences, one in 2007 and another in 2010.

Qureshi, of Morton Moss Court, Bolton, was banned from driving for six months, fined £950 for driving with no insurance, £300 for the mobile phone offence.
