*UPDATED Body of Missing Manchester student Souvik Pal found in canal

The body of missing Manchester student Souvik Pal has been discovered in a canal, police have confirmed.

Specialist officers in Old Trafford discovered a body in the Bridgewater Canal near Manchester United's stadium at around 2.00pm today (22nd January).

The deceased has since been identified as 18-year-old Pal, who was reported missing by a flatmate at about 5.30am on Tuesday 1st January.

The victim's family have been informed of the news and are receiving support from specially-trained GMP officers.

A post mortem carried out on Pal's body proved inconclusive. Further toxicology tests will be conducted to help establish the cause of death.

Detective Chief Inspector Colin Larkin said: "Our thoughts and condolences are with Souvik’s family at this devastating time and our officers are doing all they can to support them.

"We do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances surrounding Souvik’s death and a file will be submitted to the Coroner in due course."

Pal was last seen at the Warehouse Project, Trafford Wharf Road, at about 11pm on Monday 31st December 2012.
