Greater Manchester women report Sir Jimmy Savile abuse

by Mark Langshaw. Published Thu 11 Oct 2012 10:01

Two women from Greater Manchester have claimed they were abused by late disc jockey and TV personality Sir Jimmy Savile.

The alleged sexual assault is said to have taken place in Salford in the 1960s, when both victims were under 16.

Savile, who died last year aged 84, was based in Greater Manchester around that period, managing night clubs and presenting episodes of Top of the Pops from there.

The two women made the allegations to Greater Manchester Police, who have passed them on to the Metropolitan Police.

The news follows clams that Savile has a long, dark history of child abuse. A police investigation into the Jim'll Fix It host's past was launched following the airing of an ITV documentary in which the claims were made.

Scotland Yard are said to be pursuing 120 lines of inquiry against Savile, some of which include accusations of abuse on BBC premises.

The BBC have pledged their full cooperation to the investigation.
