Dog walker savagely attacked in Greater Manchester

A man was subjected to a savage attack at the hands of a gang of youths while walking his dog in Greater Manchester.

At around 8pm on Friday 14th September, a 28-year-old man was walking his German Shepherd dog through Painswick Park in Wythenshawe, when he was confronted by a group of between eight and 10 youths.

One of the group shouted "those dogs belong with the police", before another struck him in the head. He was punched and kicked about the head and body while on the ground.

His dog attempted to protect him, but was kicked so hard by a member of the gang that it was thrown into the air.

The victim lost a piece of his ear in the attack and also suffered a dislocated shoulder, three cracked ribs and a gash beneath his eye.

Detective Constable Lucy Barnes, said: "This was an extremely violent and unprovoked attack by a group of youths - possibly fuelled by drink - on an innocent dog walker who appears to have been targeted due to the mistaken belief that he may be connected to the police.

"Such incidents are rare and will not be tolerated by the police or local community.

"We have an ongoing operation dedicated to tackling anti-social behaviour and our efforts will continue in this area to identify offenders and deter further offences.

"I want to reassure residents that there will be extra officers in the evenings, especially at weekends, patrolling the park and wider area.

"I would urge anyone who saw the attack or knows who these violent thugs are to contact us in absolute confidence.

"The victim’s dog may have bitten one of the offenders before being kicked and if you know anyone who may have suffered a bite please get in touch."

Anyone with information is asked to call the police on 0161 856 4882 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
