Wigan Athletic fan banned from stadiums for attempting to incite violence

A Wigan Athletic fan who attempted to incite violence at football matches has been banned from stadiums for three years.

Daniel Lannon, 20, was handed the sentence at Wigan Magistrates' Court after Greater Manchester Police presented evidence of him involved in a catalogue of incidents at Lattics games home and away.

The offender was already banned from Wigan's DW Stadium after being filmed invading the pitch during last season's clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The footage also showed him attempting to antagonise the away supporters in an effort to incite disorder.

Police Constable Ashley Keyte, from GMP's Specialist Operations Branch, said: "Football related violence has no part in modern society yet some mindless individuals still think it acceptable to brawl with others for no other reason than their allegiance to another team.

"We work hard to prevent incidents of football related disorder but when they happen we will endeavour to identify offenders and bring them to justice.

"We will also work with the football clubs across Greater Manchester to ensure that those who are convicted, or who we can prove to be a threat to public safety, are banned not only from the ground of the team they support, but every single stadium in the UK."

A spokesman for Wigan Athletic said: "We work very closely with GMP to eradicate this type of behaviour from our ground and we welcome any attempts to ensure the DW Stadium remains a passionate family friendly environment."
