A man from Greater Manchester has been jailed for life following an unprovoked knife attack on a 12-year-old girl.

Lawrence Wood, 31, of Lincoln Place, Marsh Green, Wigan, was ordered to serve a minimum of 15 years behind bars after pleading guilty to attempted murder at an earlier hearing.

The assault took place shortly before 4.15pm on Wednesday 8th February when Wood approached his young victim on Stranraer Road in Marsh Green at random while she played in the street.

He stabbed her twice in the back and left the scene. The girl required hospital treatment for a punctured lung, but has since recovered from her injuries.

Wood turned himself in at a local police station later that day, and was found to be in possession of the knife.

Detective Constable Richard Willoughby from Wigan CID said: “Clearly this is a horrifying and random attack on an innocent young girl who was simply out playing in the street with her younger sibling.

“Only Wood himself will ever know what was going through his head at the time to prompt him to carry out such an attack.

“Today, this dangerous individual has rightly been put behind bars for a long time where he can pose no further threat to others in the community.

“Although this young girl has recovered physically from her injuries, this has been an extremely distressing time for both her and her family. I hope today they can now begin to move on from their ordeal.”
