A bed-bound pensioner was left in a state of shock after being confronted by intruders at his home on Priory Street in Bowdon, Trafford.
The 95-year-old, who is in poor health and requires a carer, awoke sometime between 12.30pm and 2.15pm to find two burglars standing over him.
They demanded money from the man, but fled empty-handed when he informed them that he did not have any.
Police believe the offenders gained access to the premises by scaling a wooden gate at the side of the property and prising open the back door with a screwdriver or similar implement.
The first man was described as white, about 5ft tall, with a slim build and fair hair. He was wearing a light coloured baseball cap and light blue clothes.
His accomplice was also white, about 6ft tall, of a slim build and also with fair hair. He was wearing a light-coloured baseball cap and dark blue clothes.
Police are now appealing to anyone with information to come forward.
Police Constable Alfred Gumbs, of the Volume Crime Team, said: "This man is in his 90s, in poor health and essentially bed bound, and was left in a state of utter shock to be confronted by thieves demanding cash.
"There was absolutely nothing he could do to stop them searching his house and had to remain in bed, helpless, while these cowards rooted through his home, invading his privacy and leaving him extremely upset.
"We need to catch these men so I would appeal to anyone who witnessed what happened to come forward.
"Quite unusually, these men struck during daylight hours, so I am appealing to anyone who might have seen two men matching these descriptions who were hanging around the area to come forward."
Anyone with information should call police on 0161 856 0950 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
