Greater Manchester Police have confirmed that a man who was found unconscious in the Wigan area has died.

Francis Farrell, 56, was discovered on Frog Lane with a head injury at around 4.15am on 17th June.

He was taken to hospital, where he remained in a serious condition, before passing away on 20th June.

Police inquiries into his death are ongoing, and investigating officers are appealing for witnesses. CCTV stills of the victim's last sighting have been released.

Farrell was last seen leaving Wiend Bar in Wigan town centre at about 3.50am. He was captured on CCTV walking along Frog Lane at 3.58am, and found unconscious around 15 minutes later.

The victim was wearing a light blue checked shirt with light blue jeans, black shoes, a black fleece and black hat. He is white and around 6ft tall, of medium build with short grey hair.

A 35-year-old man was arrested in connection with Farrell's death, but has been released on bail until 19th July, pending further inquiries.

Detective Chief Inspector Howard Millington from Wigan CID, said: “First and foremost, I would like to extend my sympathies to the victim’s family and friends at what is clearly a devastating time for them. We have specially trained officers we use to support families in these circumstances.

“I have a team of detectives investigating this incident who are working to establish exactly what has happened and provide some much needed answers for his family.

“Because of the injuries Francis has sustained we are treating this as suspicious. We are appealing to anyone who saw him in the early hours of the morning on Sunday 17 June to get in contact.

“Did you perhaps see Francis leaving Wiend bar, were you on or around Frog Lane, did you speak to him at any point or did you witness how he came to suffer his injuries?

Anyone with information is asked to call police at Wigan CID on 0161 856 7149 or contact the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
