A suspected robbery who was detained by the occupants of a home he targeted has been arrested by Greater Manchester Police.

The incident occurred at around 2am this morning (15th June) when a 58-year-old woman was confronted by two intruders armed with crowbars at her address in Seymour Grove, Stretford.

When one of the offenders told his accomplice to "get the gun", the woman called to her two sons, aged 32 and 29, for assistance.

As she left the room to alert the emergency services, she saw her sons struggling with the intruders.

Officers attended the address within minutes after the alarm had been raised to discover that the brothers had detained a 27-year-old man. A loaded firearm was found close to the scene.

The brothers were treated in hospital for minor injuries, and the intruder was arrested on suspicion of of aggravated burglary and possession of a firearm. He remains in police custody for questioning.

A second man, 30, was arrested in the early hours of the morning. He is also being held for questioning.

Detective Inspector Debbie Oakes, from Trafford CID, said: “The occupants’ extreme bravery coupled with our rapid response has led to the arrest of a suspect and I must commend the efforts of those involved, in particular the two brothers at the address.

“The fact we have recovered a loaded firearm demonstrates the offenders are serious criminals and I would urge anyone with information about those involved to contact us.

“It also means one less potentially fatal weapon is off the streets and out of the hands of criminals, which can only be a good thing for the people of Greater Manchester.

“We work hard to deter and investigate any incidents where innocent members of the public are threatened and attacked in their own homes and our latest crime figures reflect this, with domestic burglary and robbery offences both down by 14%.

“If anyone has any information about this or any other incident I would urge them to contact us in absolute confidence.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Trafford CID on 0161 856 9168, or Crimestoppers anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
