An ex-firefighter's medal honouring his distinguished service has been stolen during a burglary in the Manchester region.

The break-in occurred at a home on John Street, Heyrod in Tameside sometime between 2.00pm and 2.30pm on 8th May.

Personal items were also taken by the thieves, including a Samsung laptop, a Nikon digital camera, a Sony digital camera, two Nokia mobile phones, a Medion MP3 player,a Ventura DVD player and jewellery.

The homeowner's long service medal from the Fire and Rescue Service, which had his personal details engraved on it, was also stolen during the burglary.

Police have issued a picture of a similar medal and are appealing for anyone with information that may aid their investigation to come forward.

Detective Constable Clare Robinson said: "The medal these thieves so callously snatched is recognition of the victim's distinguished career protecting and saving the lives of others. Its personal and sentimental value cannot be overestimated, and it belongs in the home of man who has spent years keeping members of the public safe, not in the hands of some desperate criminals.

"That is why it is so important we find not just the offenders themselves, but the medal itself and return it the rightful owner.

"I would appeal to anyone who has information about this burglary to come forward.

"The medal can have no value to the thieves other than to sell on. I would therefore urge local dealers or collectors of such memorabilia to be on their guard and if you are offered such a medal, please be cautious and call police immediately."

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 856 9345 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
