The family of a woman who was found dead on a motorway in the Manchester region have paid tribute to her.

Veronica Galbraith, 37, was described as a "devoted and lovely sister" who will be "sadly missed".

Police were called to a section of the southbound M61 motorway at Kearsley in Bolton, just after 2am on Friday 8 June following reports that a body had been sighted in the carriageway.

Galbraith, who was from the Walkden area, suffered multiple injuries in a collision that proved fatal at the scene.

Her family said in a statement: “Veronica was a devoted and lovely sister who was loved by her whole family. She will be sadly missed."

Police inquiries into the incident are ongoing, but there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.

Inspector Paul Rowe from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said, “This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with Veronica’s family and friends at this difficult time, who are receiving support from specially trained officers.

“A full investigation is underway to establish the exact circumstances surrounding what happened.

“I am asking for anyone that was using the M61 southbound between junctions 4 and 3 between 2am and 2.15am on Friday morning, to contact us if you saw anything.”

Police are appealing to anyone with information or who was on or near the motorway around the time of the incident to call police on 0161 856 4742.
