A murder investigation has been launched after a woman’s body was found in a Manchester-region street.

Police were called to the street in Farnworth, Bolton, at about 1pm on Monday after the body of a 31-year-old woman was discovered.

They had been alerted by the ambulance service and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene on Queen Street.

A post-mortem examination has not yet been carried out, and the woman has not yet been formally identified.

Greater Manchester Police major incident team detectives were working with police officers from Bolton on the investigation.

Supt Steve Nibloe said: "Clearly there will be very understandable anxiety in this community at the death of this young woman.

"First and foremost, our thoughts are with this woman's family following her tragic death.

"I want to try and reassure people who may be concerned that at this stage we do not believe this was a random attack."

“Although this investigation is only a few hours old, I want to try and reassure people who may be concerned that at this stage we do not believe this was a random attack.

“We know people will be shocked and upset and even worried, but I would like to stress that there is no reason for them to be fearful.

“However, there will be an increased police presence in the area in the coming days so I would urge anyone with concerns to approach an officer and speak to them, in confidence if needed.

“Our inquiry is now focused on trying to locate the person or persons responsible and I would also appeal to anyone who has information to come forward.”

Anyone with information should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
