A man has been handed a five-year jail sentence for a robbery in Greater Manchester.

Tanzeel Aslam, 25, committed the offence at a Domino's Pizza on Elms Square, Whitefield in Bury at around 10.30am on Sunday 14th February 2010.

Aslam seized a member of staff who was taking out rubbish at the back of the fast food store, and forced him inside. He demanded cash from the employee, striking him about the head with a metal object repeatedly.

The offender then forced him into the toilets where he bound his hands with cable ties and gagged him with duct tape.

A second member of staff - a 21-year-old girl - arrived on the scene minutes later. She was also dragged into the toilets and threatened.

Fearing she would receive the same treatment as her colleague, the woman handed over money to Aslam, who then left with her handbag.

Police were called after he had fled the scene. Aslam was identified as the perpetrator by forensics investigators, who found his saliva on the duct tape.

He was arrested in December 2010, and due to stand trial in last month. However, he failed to return from Pakistan in time for the court hearing, and was taken into police custody at Manchester airport on 1st May.

Aslam will an additional two months for failing to attend his original trial, in addition to the five years for robbery.

Detective Constable Lindsey Worrall from Bury CID said: "Thankfully, both victims did not suffer physical injuries, despite the man being hit across the head. However, both have suffered psychologically and say it will take them a long time to get over what happened that morning.

"Aslam used force and aggression to get what he wanted, ensuring his victims were left terrified and fearing for their safety.

"He thought he had got away with his crime but thanks to modern science and DNA testing, we proved that the law will eventually catch up with you and we will bring you to justice."
