Former Greater Manchester Police sergeant jailed for misconduct

A former Greater Manchester Police (GMP) sergeant has been jailed for misconduct after admitting that he had sex with a vulnerable woman while on duty.

Peter Jee, 38, of Bent Lanes, Urmston, pleaded guilty to one charge of misconduct in a public office and was sentenced to two years in prison at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court.

The incident occurred on 20th August 2010, when Jee was serving as a response sergeant in Rochdale.

He attended an address with two constables in tow, following a 999 call from a woman who was threatening to harm herself with a knife.

After the three officers had dealt with the situation appropriately and left the residence, Jee returned and had sex with the woman, whom he knew to be bi-polar.

He resigned from his post in January last year.

The matter was subsequently reported and investigation was launched by GMP's Professional Standards Branch under the management of the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Deputy Chief Constable Ian Hopkins, said: "The overwhelming majority of GMP staff work to the highest levels helping and supporting members of our community, often making personal sacrifices to do so.

"They do this because they care passionately about protecting people.

"Sadly, Jee's inexcusable actions let everyone down: those that we protect and those that work selflessly to deliver policing across Greater Manchester.

"I want to reassure everyone that we do not and will not tolerate such behaviour.

"The sentence given sends out a clear message that society expects the highest standards from those who have a duty to protect them."

Jee was initially accused of rape and misconduct. He maintains he is innocence of the former offence, and the prosecution deemed it not in the public interest to proceed with it.
