Salford mayor backs anti-cuts demonstration

by Mark Langshaw. Published Tue 08 May 2012 09:23

Salford's newly elected mayor Ian Stewart pledged his support to the May Day protestors rallying against spending cuts in the public sector.

Around 200 individuals marked International Workers Day by marching from the historic Bexley Square to Manchester city, with many brandishing placards opposing the government spending deductions.

The marchers joined forces with trade unionists and other protest groups for a bigger rally at Manchester Cathedral Gardens, addressed by Fire Brigades Union General Secretary Matt Wrack.

Stewart, former Labour MP for Eccles, addressed crowds at the event, vowing to work with the party to help curb the effects of the spending cuts.

"I will work with the Labour movement, employers, the voluntary sector and anybody else to mitigate the worst effects of those cuts," he told the BBC.

The rally was organised by Manchester, Salford, Bury and Oldham Trades Councils.
