Guilty: Jonathan Marron

A man has been handed a life sentence for stabbing another man to death at a petrol station in Greater Manchester.

Jonathan Marron, 21, pleaded guilty to the murder of 24-year-old Ian Sudworth and will serve a minimum of 18 years.

The incident took place at Marsh Green in the Wigan area shortly after 03:40am on 18th November last year.

Marron passed by the petrol station after attending a party, and became embroiled in an argument with Sudworth and his girlfriend.

He punched his victim's partner in the face with enough force to cave her teeth in.

Sudworth then suffered multiple stab wounds in a physical altercation with the attacker, and died in hospital from his injuries.

Senior Investigating Officer Andy Tattersall said, "It's sad that a young man has lost his life in this way.

"Marron went out with the intention of intimidating all who crossed his path. He punched a young woman in her face so hard it pushed her teeth back and when Ian tried to stick up for her he fatally stabbed him.

"This was a callous attack on a young man trying to do the right thing.

"The injuries Marron inflicted on Mr Sudworth cost him his life and left a family devastated.

"I hope this sentencing provides the victim's family and friends with some sense of justice although they will never be able to fill the hole in their hearts that has been left following his untimely death."
