A police officer remains hospitalised in a critical condition following a road traffic collision in Bolton earlier this week.
Greater Manchester Police have named the individual as 45-year-old Police Constable Peter Charlesworth.
Charlesworth was responding to reports of a disturbance in Halliwell at 12.40am on Thursday 26th April, heading there via Crompton Way in a marked police van.
Prior to the Almond Street junction, the vehicle collided with a tree. A second officer responding to the same incident saw the damaged van and called for help.
The 45-year-old officer was trapped inside the wreckage for a short time before being freed by the fire brigade. He suffered head and chest injuries, and remains in hospital in a "critical" condition.
A statement from Peter’s family said: "Peter is a great bloke and has been a police officer for ten years and is currently in his dream role as a dog handler.
“On the morning of Thursday 26th April he was at work and on patrol responding to an emergency call from the public when his vehicle was involved in a collision. His partner Sue and all Peter's family are devastated and pray for his speedy recovery."
Investing officers are appealing for witnesses of the collision. Anyone with information should phone the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4745.
