A police officer was left in a critical condition following a road traffic collision in Bolton.
The officer was responding to reports of a disturbance in Halliwell at 12.40am on Thursday 26th April, heading there via Crompton Way in a marked police van.
Prior to the Almond Street junction, the vehicle collided with a tree. A second officer responding to the same incident saw the damaged van and called for help.
The 45-year-old officer was trapped inside the wreckage for a short time before being freed by the fire brigade. He suffered head and chest injuries, and remains in hospital in a "critical" condition.
Greater Manchester Police are now appealing for witnesses of the collision.
Chief Inspector Rachel Buckle from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: "Crompton Way is usually a busy road but I understand due to the time of the collision, it is likely there were not many people around.
"However, I would ask anyone who may have been walking or driving along Crompton Way and did witness the collision or saw the van travelling prior to the incident to get in touch.
"Specially trained officers are supporting the man's family and colleagues at this difficult time and our thoughts remain with them."
