A man has been charged with killing little Rio Smedley at his home in Greater Manchester.

Daniel Rigby, 22, is accused of murdering the two-year-old at a house in Cheriton Drive, Bolton, last Sunday (22nd April).

Blond-haired Rio was found unconscious at the two-bedroomed property after police were called following a 999 alert for an ambulance that said he had stopped breathing.

Medics rushed the toddler to the Royal Bolton Hospital but were unable to revive him and he died without regaining consciousness.

A post mortem examination found that Rio died as a result of a severe abdominal injury.

Rio's mother, Kirsty, who also has a daughter Ella, 5, and is pregnant, has been comforted by relatives after the death of her son.

Rigby, of Somerset Avenue, Tyldesley, near Wigan, is due to appear before Bolton Magistrates Court on Thursday 26 April.
