Wigan Council has announced that it is awarding a £250 pay increase to any staff earning less than £21,000 per year.
The move, effective from 1 April, is in line with government policy, but flies in the face of the 3rd year pay freeze imposed by national council leaders.
General trade union GMB applauded the initiative and called for other councils to do the same.
Brian Strutton, GMB National Secretary, said: “Wigan Council is to be congratulated for having the decency and foresight to have budgeted for this pay rise despite the imposed cutbacks they are facing.
"The Council has rightly recognised that they need to keep their staff motivated to deliver ever improving services to the people of Wigan and I’m sure the staff will respond.
"I would strongly encourage other councils to follow Wigan’s example.”
National council leaders sought to impose a 3rd year pay freeze in 2012 despite government policy being to give a £250 pay rise for those earning below the £21,000 mark.
A significant number of councils are reported to be breaking ranks with their leaders and paying the £250.
