Greater Manchester mother who hid dead baby spared jail

A Greater Manchester mother who admitted hiding the body of her dead baby in a garden has been spared jail.

Bury resident Fatima Ali, 26, attempted to keep her daughter's birth a secret, and neglected to seek appropriate medical care when she went into labour.

Bolton Crown Court heard that the child survived less then two hours after her umbilical cord was cut in Ali's bedroom. A post-mortem failed to uncover the cause of death.

Ali disposed of the body outside a house in Tinline Street, where it was discovered wrapped in a shawl.

The mother admitted to charges of cruelty to a person under 16, and was given a 26-week sentence, suspended for two years.

Judge John Appleby said: "The tragedy that followed is of immense disaster for this child. She died within two hours of her birth and had you acted appropriately her life could have been saved.

"There is no evidence that you ill-treated or assaulted the child and it is still a mystery perhaps as to the course of action you took following her birth.

"It is evident that you have suffered from psychological stress and trauma for a number of years."
