The severely burnt body of a man has been found in woodland in the Greater Manchester region.

Police were called to the Pennington Road area in Leigh at around 3.00pm yesterday after a passer-by discovered the charred remains.

A post-mortem is under way to establish the man's identity and yield clues about how he died. Police are treating the death as suspicious.

Det Supt Jen Williams, of Greater Manchester Police, said: “Firstly, I want to stress that we are at the early stages of our inquiries.

“A team of detectives is now working to establish the identity of the man and investigate the full circumstances that led to his death.

“I know that residents will be alarmed by this incident, but I want to reassure the community that a thorough investigation is now taking place and there are extra patrols in the area.

“I would urge anyone who has information that can assist our inquiries to call us as soon as possible.”

Anyone with any information is asked to call police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
