Wigan Parish Church is to welcome internationally-renowned acoustic group Show of Hands for their only North West date of their Spires and Beams tour on November 5th.
Steve Knightley, Phil Beer and Miranda Sykes are widely acknowledged as the finest acoustic roots group in England. The band have built up a huge following which has seen them sell out the Royal Albert Hall three times, headline major festivals from Glastonbury to WOMAD and play all over the world, from Europe to America, Australia and India.
Voted Best Live Act by the public at the 2004 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, they play a genre-defying mix of rock, roots, blues, country and traditional music.
They are also influenced by the music of other countries, and their songs include an array of instruments from slide guitar to fiddle, and mandolin to South American cuatro.
This year they won Best Original Song for their song ‘Arrogance Ignorance and Greed’ and Steve and Phil won Best Duo at the Radio 2 Folk Awards, further cementing their reputation.
The performance at Wigan Parish Church is part of their Spires and Beams tour of churches and cathedrals. As well as being their only North-West date on this tour, this is one of only three northern dates. They will be supported by Jackie Oates, whose 2009 album ‘Hyperboreans’, helped establish her as one of the leading folk artists in Britain today.
Organiser David Cartlidge from Wigan Parish Church said, ‘This is the fifth in our continuing series of acoustic/roots music concerts. The biggest names from the folk world now recognise Wigan Parish Church as an important venue to showcase their work, and they are extremely appreciative of the audience here. We are truly delighted to be welcoming such a big name to our church.’
Tickets are £16 and £13 and are available from David Cartlidge on 01942 824 291.
Doors open 7.00, performance starts at 8.00
