Four secondary schools from across the North of England were given the chance to write, star in and film their own mini episodes of hit BBC One Drama, Waterloo Road which culminated in a screening at the Printworks in Manchester on Tuesday evening. (5th October)

The schools worked with scriptwriters from Shed Productions, who make Waterloo Road, to come up with three to five minute episodes touching on one of the following themes: ‘The New Kid’, ‘First Day Back’, ‘First Day as Head Boy or Girl’ and ‘First Day as Teacher’.

The project is a collaboration between the BBC, Shed Productions and local schools and was designed to give the Year 10 and 11 students involved an opportunity to have hands on experience working in television production.

Peter Salmon, Director BBC North said: ‘The talent and energy displayed in the films we showcased was incredible. I have no doubt that some of the young people in the room tonight will be working at the BBC in the not too distant future’.

The schools that took part in the Waterloo Road project came from regions across the North.

North East - Heworth Grange School, Gateshead.

East Yorks and Lincs - Whitgift School, Grimsby.

Yorkshire - Meadowhead School, Sheffield.

North West - Fulwood Academy , Preston.

Ben Stephenson, Controller BBC Drama and Eileen Gallagher, Chief Executive of Shed Productions took part in a panel giving expert feedback to the schools. Guests attending included Waterloo Road cast members Robson Green, Mark Benton and George Sampson.
