The famous Manchester peregrine's latest hatchlings have braved the elements to embark on their first flight.

RSPB representatives confirm that the first chick left the safety of its nest on 7th June to explore the neighbourhood, and one of its three siblings is believed to have followed suit shortly after.

Joanna Keene, Manchester People Engagement Officer, said: “Generally, peregrines don’t like the rain so it has not been ideal conditions for the juveniles learning how to fly.

"We think that two or three of the birds fledged by the end of the weekend and since then all four of them have been seen over the city centre.

“The recent bad weather has had a devastating impact on many nesting birds throughout the country so we are delighted and relieved that all four chicks from this peregrine season in Manchester have fledged successfully.”

Vistors to Manchester city centre have the opportunity to observe the peregrines from Exchange Square until 15th July. RSPB staff and volunteers will be on hand with telescopes and binoculars between 11am and 6pm, weather permitting.

The Manchester Peregrines project, now in its sixth consecutive year, has seen the birds raise a total of 25 chicks. Internet users worldwide can observe the nest via a webcam link set up by Manchester Digital Development Agency.
