Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy is to adapt classic fairy tales for a festive show at Manchester's Royal Exchange theatre.

Rats' Tales will include the writer's take on age-old stories such as The Pied Piper of Hamelin, Tattercoats, and Clever Gretel.

Duffy, who hosts regular poetry nights at the Royal Exchange, will pen a script for Melly Still to dramatise and direct.

A spokesperson for the theatre told the BBC that the event is a "real landmark".

He said: "We've had a tremendous relationship with Carol Ann.

"In recent years, she has been doing regular events with local poets and she promises that Rats' Tales will be a transformative and immersive event for adults and children alike."

Rats' Tales will run at the Royal Exchange from 29th November 2011 to 12th January 2013.
