Street artist brings giant Space Invaders arcade to Manchester

A street artist has created a 17m high Space Invaders video game in Manchester city centre.

Luke Egan, better known as Filthy Luker, constructed the giant-sized arcade unit at the Town Hall from road barriers, traffic cones and other street furniture.

Egan's project, developed for the ‘Make With A Red Stripe’ art scheme, is the largest interactive piece of artwork Manchester has ever hosted.

The artist said: “I’ve been obsessed with making art from street furniture for quite some time and had noticed the similarities between these road barriers and the classic invaders - and they seem to be taking over the city.

"The 'Make With a Red Stripe' project is all about using everyday objects to transform the mundane, which was right up my street and enabled me to realise my concept.”

The public can 'play' the game during the evening, when it is illuminated up by LED lights, though none of the elements actually move.

The artwork will be on display at Manchester's Town Hall throughout April.
