Emmerdale will air a live episode in October to mark the show's 40th anniversary.
ITV Studios is planning a week-long celebration to commemorate the soap opera's milestone year, with further highlights to be announced.
Series producer Stuart Blackburn promises that the anniversary will be a feast of "must see tv featuring two weddings, one of which will be the most unexpected we have ever seen, plus the birth of two babies."
The move sees Emmerdale join a raft of other British soaps to have broadcast live episodes, including Eastenders and Coronation Street.
Further highlights and the date and length of the live special will be "announced on a separate occasion."
Emmerdale appears on ITV1 Monday to Friday at 7pm, with an extra episode at 8pm every Thursday.
