Young North West performers sought for prestigious dance training scheme

Northwest Dance, The Lowry Youth Dance Partnership is offering young performers across Greater Manchester, Cheshire and Lancashire a taste of life as a dance professional, potentially leading to a place on The Centre for Advanced Training Scheme in Dance at The Lowry. Currently in its third year, the initiative is designed to offer young performers aged 12 -18 a channel into the professional dance industry, preparing them for professional training.

The CAT is delighted to announce a series of exciting open days across the region this spring - in Manchester, Warrington, Blackpool, Burnley, Congleton, Lancaster and Chester – to introduce potential participants to the scheme (please see notes to editor for full details and dates of each open day).

Each Open Day will include a contemporary dance technique class and creative session for the young people, followed by a question and answer session that gives both potential students and their parents/guardians the chance to find out more about the CAT scheme and other opportunities available through NorthWest Dance and its partners. The Open Days are free to attend, but must be booked in advance by contacting: 0161 876 2018/ CAT@thelowry.com for online at www.northwestdance.org.uk/CAT

Every participant attending an open day then has the opportunity to attend the final CAT audition, which will be held at The Lowry on Sunday 17th June from 10am – 6pm. Successful auditionees will offered a place on the scheme to commence in September 2012 and will be able to access the training until 18 years of age prior to commencing higher education institutions. Please note that to audition for the scheme young people must be between 12 and 16 years of age, and previous dance experience is not essential as students are offered places purely on potential.

The Lowry Centre for Advanced Training Scheme is a part time, pre vocational course, providing access to high quality training and nurturing in dance to young people who have a passion for the art form and who wish to progress toward full time training. The scheme is funded by the Department of Education through the recognised Music and Dance Scheme and offers intensive training opportunities with professional dance teachers, choreographers and practitioners. The aim of the scheme is – "to help identify, and assist, children with exceptional potential, regardless of their personal circumstances, to benefit from world-class specialist training as part of a broad and balanced education, which will enable them, if they choose, to proceed towards self-sustaining careers in music and dance.” (Music and Dance Scheme Advisory Group’s Report 2000/01)

Since its inception the scheme has grown year on year, with more initial open days being offered this year owing to popular demand. Many previous participants have since gone on to professional training and/or careers in the dance industry.

Current CAT Students will be performing new choreographed work by company members from Random Dance, Rambert Dance Company and Phoenix Dance Theatre as part of ‘The 3rd Wave’ at The Lowry on the 6th and 7th July 2012. This final end of year show promises to delight and astound audience members by the quality and professionalism of such talented and aspiring young dancers. A must see.
