Children from a local charity have enjoyed a fun-filled day out at an activity centre in Stockport thanks to a Greater Manchester travel company.

Action for Blind People, which offers help and support for blind and partially sighted people in the city, won £350 to go towards a special trip after being chosen as a winner in System One Travelcards ‘Big Day Out’ competition.

The charity’s Manchester branch was nominated for the prize by members of its local community, who believed that the hard working organisation deserved to be treated to a ‘Big Day Out’ in the Greater Manchester area.

The nominees were whittled down to nine finalists by a panel of judges, with the final winners being chosen through a public vote which took place on System One’s Facebook page, OneManchester.

System One appealed to local residents to highlight individual local community groups, charities and organisations, who deserved a day out in the region.

20 blind and partially sighted children from the charity, aged between 4 and 11, enjoyed a day at Jump Space, Stockport.

Jump Space is a trampolining, soft play and therapy centre where the children enjoyed facilities such as soft slides and swings, followed by lunch at a local restaurant.

Community fundraiser at Action for Blind People commented Liz Greenwood said: “The children loved having the opportunity to play to their heart’s content in a safe and fun environment.

“The £350 provided by System One allowed us to offer the children a memorable day out and gave parents the chance to relax and socialise with other families who also have blind and visually impaired children.

“Winning the competition was even more special to us as it was voted for by the local community, which shows that it supports and recognises the work that we do in the region.”

General Manager of GMTL Gradyn Thompson added: “Many vital community organisations in Greater Manchester are struggling to cover costs in the tough economic climate. So our aim with the ‘Big Day Out’ was for System One to give some of these groups the opportunity to enjoy a fun day out.

“It is great to know we have enabled such a worthwhile local organisation to provide an fun and exciting day out for its young members and their families.”

The ‘Big Day Out’ competition was launched earlier this year, to celebrate the launch of System One Travelcard’s Junior DaySaver ticket.
