A Greater Manchester man has swept the board at the annual ‘Bus Driver of the Year 2012’ awards, picking up two gongs and scoring highest on the written test.

Stagecoach Manchester employee Daniel Wilton was named as 'Best Newcomer' and 'Best Stagecoach Driver', placing him in an overall third in the contest.

Wilton undertook a theory test and gruelling obstacle course at the event, in which he was required to manoeuvre his bus around specifically placed hazards such as eggs, and avoid spilling a jug of water placed on board.

The Cheadle Hulme resident saw off competition from 100 other drivers from across the country to help Stagecoach Manchester to its highest ever finish in the competition.

Wilton's colleagues at the firm, Dmitrij Potapcik and Michael McManus, came 23rd and 52nd, respectively.

"As a newcomer to the competition, I am incredibly pleased with what I have achieved, especially considering the calibre of the other contestants. It was a wonderful experience and I can’t wait to return next year to see if I can build on this performance," said Wilton.

Christopher Bowles, managing director of Stagecoach Manchester, commented: "Daniel, Michael and Dmitrij performed extremely well at this year’s competition, which is testament to their training and dedication.

"Daniel’s hard work and focus on the day really paid off and has led to Stagecoach Manchester receiving its highest ever position in this competition. We are honoured to have them all on our driving team."

The ‘Bus Driver of the Year' have been held every year since 1967.
