Manchester City legend and ambassador Mike Summerbee made a surprise guest appearance on the UKTI North West market visit in China this week.

North West firms including Love Creative, Manchester Business School, EA Technology, EDM Ltd, Liverpool Vision and UClan visited Shanghai, Beijing and Kuala Lumpur on a trip organised by the UKTI in British embassies and consulates in each territory.

The market visit was scheduled to coincide with Manchester City and Manchester United's pre-season tours of Asia, as well as the Olympic games.

Delegates watched City defeat Arsenal 2-0 at the Bird’s Nest Stadium in Beijing on the same day as the opening ceremony of London 2012, having seen United compete in the Chevrolet China Cup against Shanghai Shenhua earlier in the week.

On the final leg of the market tour, the delegates linked up with City officials in Kuala Lumpur, including Summerbee, club CEO John MacBeath, head of promotions Nick Becker and legal counsel Nick Carter, at the residence of the UKTI Director of Trade & Investment.

The City executives, accompanied by two security guards, showcased the Premier League Club Trophy to the UKTI crowd, much to their delight.

Elsewhere, the UKTI held a free event, 'Doing Business in China' back in Manchester at MediaCityUK, offering more of the region’s companies a chance to find out more about successfully trading in the Asian market.

The scheme was part of UKTI North West’s Olympic Programme which also included events on the UAE and Brazil. Delegates heard from companies Mach-Aire Ltd and Fairhursts Design Group in a panel discussion moderated by UKTI North West’s regional director Clive Drinkwater alongside experts from UKTI, China Britain Business Council and several local businesses already active in the market.

There are two free events remaining in the series: 'International Opportunities in Life Sciences' on Thursday 2nd August and 'International Opportunities in Infrastructure' on Wednesday 8th August.
