Half of Manchester bosses 'unhappy with salary'

More than half of Manchester bosses and directors are unhappy with their salary, a new report suggests.

Wickland Westcott's survey of 1,000 company heads across the UK also revealed that 5% of executives in the region believe that they are overpaid.

Just under half of Manchester bosses work more than 40 hours a week, while 11% put in between 50 and 70 hours. Some 40% work weekends.

Researchers found that 15% have missed family weddings and funerals due to work commitments, with a quarter putting in time on Christmas day or New Year. However, 60% claim that they strike a good balance between life and work.

One in six stated that they are undervalued by their colleagues, and one fifth are unhappy with the attitudes of their co-workers. However, 38% believe that their staff are inspired by them.

Colin Mercer, Managing Director at Wickland Westcott, said: “Anybody who is in, or wants to be in, a position of leadership and authority in a business environment will know that there is no substitute for hard work.

“Dedicated graft is the back bone of business and this is reflected in our study, many bosses work long hours and often have to put business before other things in life but the majority feel they can do this and maintain what they consider to be a happy work/life balance.

“It is also very encouraging to discover that many bosses feel they inspire those who work for them, of course there are some who feel undervalued but overall Manchester bosses are a pretty optimistic bunch. It is these two qualities, of hard work and optimism above all else, that will help lead us out of these tough economic times.”

The survey found that Manchester bosses earn an average yearly salary of £79,435. East Anglia executives were the biggest earners on £100,076, while Northern Irish company heads propped up the rest on £36,805.
