Greater Manchester technology firm Virtalis has been awarded a £2.2 million contract by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC).

The virtual reality specialist has entered a lucrative agreement to install its advanced visualisation systems at the STFC's labs in Daresbury and Rutherford.

Research scientists at both sites will use the high-tech equipment, which includes vast 3D ActiveWall displays, for problem solving and data analysis.

Dr. Richard Blake, director of the Computational Science and Engineering Department at STFC, said: "We will use our ActiveWalls for a range of science and engineering applications, including computational fluid dynamics, materials visualisation, environmental simulations and molecular modelling.

"We'll be helping small and large businesses to harness the business benefits of high performance computing; guiding them as they test and develop their applications.

"This advanced visualisation capability will allow us to view incredibly complex data and analyse results visually."

The STFC has invested £37.5 million in its Daresbury site to transform it into an international centre of excellence for computational science and engineering.
